John Joseph Worthington died peacefully at home on March 21, 2017. Survived by his wife of 68 years Virginia Barnes Worthington and his eleven children, Suzanne (Nathaniel) Holland; Sarah (Robert) Heide; Rose (Thomas) Dougherty; John (Annette); Virginia (Robert) Fox; Elen (Joseph) Polselli; Mark (Christina); Alice (Frank) Gargin; Christine (Tucker) Ramsay; Paul (Ann); and Peter (Lois). Also, survived by 31 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one on the way.

Jack was born in Philadelphia on December 18, 1923 to Edward A. and Rose Duggan Worthington. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Prep (1941) and St. Joseph College (now University) 1947. He was captain of their tennis teams and a member of the Jr. Davis Cup Team and City Tennis Champ in the early 40’s. Prior to graduation, Jack was an officer candidate, attended Villanova College (now University) to receive his commission as an Ensign, US Navy, and shortly thereafter Harvard University to attend the Naval Training School (Supply Corps), before reporting for duty on board the USS Bennington (CV-20). This training was under the V-7 Program, colloquially known as “90 Day Wonders” to increase the ranks of Naval Officers needed in World War II.

He married Virginia Ruth Barnes June 19, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Church, Woodbury, NJ. Jack worked with his father at Edward A. Worthington & Son, Realtors and Appraisers, Philadelphia. He was a 60 year parishioner of Incarnation Church, Mantua.

Family and Friends are invited to visit from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Church Of The Incarnation, 240 Main Street Mantua, New Jersey 08051. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am. Burial with Military Honors to follow at Wenonah Cemetery in Mantua, NJ 08051.
