Obituary for Margaretta "Phifer" Henderson

Margaretta Low Henderson (Phifer), age 97 years, formerly of Thorofare, West Deptford, died Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Pitman Manor, Pitman, NJ.

Margaretta was born February 9, 1918 in Woodbury, NJ. She was the daughter of Allen and Florence Phifer. She attended a small elementary school in Mantua Grove, West Deptford and graduated from Paulsboro High School in 1935.

As a young woman, she worked in an ice cream shop in Woodbury where she met her future beloved husband, James Henderson.

She was a long time member of the former Mantua Grove Union Sunday School, and also, of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Thorofare. She enjoyed several women's groups in the Sunday School and Church.

Margaretta enjoyed baking, painting in water colors, and growing flowers. She was employed at Lodge's Flower Farm and was a member of the Mickleton Garden Club.

She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Ella Fox, Allena Phifer, Allen, Howard, and William Phifer.

She is survived by her children, Holly and Kenneth Taylor of Sewell, Carol and Michael Rainbolt of Marlton, James and Marcia Henderson of Herndon, Virginia, and Bruce and Mary Ellen Henderson of Woodbury Heights. She is survived by her grandchildren, Heather Kahan, Jeffrey Taylor (Nicole), Christopher Taylor (Elaina), Jason Henderson (Rachel), Michael Henderson (Allison), John Henderson (Patti) and Brian Henderson. She is also survived by six great grandchildren, Brendan and Alex Kahan, Weston and Abilene Taylor, and Matthew and Elizabeth Henderson.

Relatives and friends may visit from 9:30 to 11:30 AM on Friday, August 28th at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Mantua where a funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, In Margaretta's memory, donations can be made to Pitman Manor Fellowship Fund at 535 N. Oak St., Pitman, NJ 08071 or to St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 74 Church St., West Deptford, NJ 08066. Flowers are also welcomed.
