Obituary for Alva Spicer (Heintzel)

Alva E. Spicer, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2017 at Pitman Manor, where she was also known as "Spicy."

Alva was born at home in Upland, PA in 1922. She grew up and caused mischief in Chester, where she once broke her leg on the back of a gentleman friend's motorcycle when he turned around to kiss her and crashed into a brick wall.

As her friends in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program once noted, Alva never let any grass grow under her feet. She traveled to Hawaii and Las Vegas, attended the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA, and zipped through Epcot on her motorized scooter beeping at those who were moving too slowly. Also while at Disney, and to everyone's hilarity, she discovered elephant eggs at the Animal Kingdom.

Holiday dinners with Alva were always lively, boisterous events featuring homemade daiquiris. She taught her granddaughters how to play blackjack (casino rules) after those dinners over her famous peanut butter pie.

Alva overcame a lot in her long life. She was divorced when it was scandalous. She often juggled two jobs waitressing or bartending but always paid the bills. She beat cancer twice. She once owned a car that was stolen three times, but she got it back three times.

She did what she wanted when she wanted, and no one told her what to do.

Alva is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Richard DeMore; granddaughters Wendy DeMore (Tony Santangelo) and Sheri Clark (Roger); great grandchildren Emma, Zachary, and Holly; and niece Louise Wiltsey-Sauk.

Services will be private.
