Allen Harry Jessup, age 96, of Mullica Hill, N.J. passed away on May 8, 2023. Born in Barnsboro, N.J. to John W. Jessup and Edna Grace (Rupp), Allen was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth. Allen leaves behind children Kathleen Sanderson and her husband John of Mantua, NJ, Steven Jessup of New Castle VA, stepdaughters Donna Lombardo and her husband Frank of Lakeville MN, Lori Murray and her husband Michael of Myrtle Beach SC; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Allen was predeceased by his older sister Lorraine “Mae” Morton.
He was a life member of the American Legion, Robert Mills, Post #452 and the last original member from that post. In 1944, at just 17, after graduating high School Allen joined the Navy, and following his training as a tail gunner on a bomber, he was sent to the Pacific theatre on the Carrier USS Bennington. Allen was a talented carpenter and worked as a woodworker, cabinet maker and home builder for many years and began attending Glassboro State College, (Rowan) part time until he earned his teaching certificate.
Allen taught at Deptford HS and Washington Township HS where he also acted as a trainer on the football teams. He was one of the original teachers that started the Gloucester Co. Vocational School, now the Gloucester Co. Vocational-Technical School, Sewell. He taught Building Trades where the students learned by building many structures. He served as the President of the Teachers union and as a Union representative in the Trade school.
A memorial service will be held June 8, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. Service to follow at 7:30 pm, at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main St. Mantua. Friends & relatives are welcome to share memories of Allen’s life with us. Interment of the cremains will be private at Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Monroe Twp., NJ.
