Obituary for Alverna Mae Tozour "Cookie"

Alverna Mae Tozour "Cookie"
Our mom, Cookie, was born Alverna Mae Field on September 4, 1944, to Lester and Naomi (Watson) Field. Raised in southern New Jersey, she graduated from Paulsboro High School and earned an associates degree from Pierce Business School in Philadelphia. Cookie married Richard (“Dick”) Tozour of Pitman, New Jersey, on August 22, 1964. The couple resided in Sewell, New Jersey, and had the three of us children: Richard, Jr. (“Rich”), Lauren (“Laurie”), and Jennifer (“Jen”).

Mom had the most significant experience of her life when, as a girl of 12 or 13, she trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Not long after she married Dad, he too came to a personal faith in Christ. Early in their marriage (which encompassed 44 years), the couple dedicated themselves to raising their children to serve the Lord. Today, all three adult children are in full-time Christian ministry.

Tozour Construction Company was the family business in New Jersey. Cookie served as office manager, secretary, and bookkeeper. She ran the business so efficiently that Dad, the expert builder, observed, “There’s no doubt, our business would not have succeeded without her.” In August of 1988, Dick and Cookie moved to Pensacola, Florida.

Cookie and Dick faithfully ministered as members of Campus Church in Pensacola. Cookie’s ministry involved planning and organizing meals (annual missions conferences, men’s prayer breakfasts, etc.), visiting those in need, and personally interacting with countless college and international students. She truly had a gift for serving and a compassionate heart!

But Mom’s greatest joy was her family. When we kids were growing up, she would drop whatever she was doing to greet us with snacks after school and would attend ALL our sporting events. Supper was the highlight of each day. Our family of five would gather around the table to enjoy meals lovingly prepared as we talked about events of the day or current affairs. Cookie had ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who all called her “Nina.” They loved to include her in family hikes, trips to the beach, family games, baking, and meals out. They were all very glad that Nina loved desserts, treats, and snacks (in a true acknowledgment of her life-long nickname)! No meal was complete without dessert, no trip sufficient without snacks.

Mom was diagnosed with cancer in July 2020. She took her final breath on Thursday, January 27, and passed on to Heaven from her home in Pensacola (age 77).

Of Cookie it can be fittingly said, “…a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 10:00-11:00 am Saturday February 5, 2022 at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Mantua, NJ 08051. Funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be private at Bethel Cemetery in Sewell, NJ.
