Obituary for Carl Joseph Niedermayer

NIEDERMAYER, Carl Joseph, on November 30, 2020, age 92, of Deptford. Carl previously resided in Barrington for 60 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Barbara (Bobbie, nee Dold). For the last 12 years, Carl was blessed to share his life with his dear companion, Maureen Costello, moving to her home in 2016. He was predeceased by a brother, George, and a sister, Helen Kohler.

Carl is survived by Maureen, daughters Judith Wells (Eric) Whitaker and Patti (Corky) Pawling, four grandsons, Jonathan (Meghan) Wells and Daniel, Christopher (Dana) and David (Danielle) Pawling, and three great-granddaughters, Juniper and Maisie Wells and Olivia Pawling.

Carl was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge from the service, he worked for 38 years at the Courier-Post and at the time of his retirement in 1990, he headed the camera and plate-making department.

Carl served on the Barrington Board of Education for eight years, two as president of the Board, and later served a three-year term on Barrington’s Borough Council. He was an elder and deacon of Barrington’s First Presbyterian Church and most recently was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Haddon Heights. He volunteered on many church and community projects, such as Adopt-a-Road and Cathedral Kitchen in Camden.

Carl lived a long, happy life. Anyone who knew him would describe him as a wonderfully exuberant, happy Christian man. A good man. A man who always thought of others. A man with a killer sense of humor, a warm and welcoming smile, and a loving heart. Carl always said he was twice blessed, being able to love and be loved by two wonderful women. His family was his greatest joy.

Donations in Carl’s memory can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Haddon Heights, 28 Seventh Avenue, Haddon Heights, NJ, 08035 or Teen Challenge NJ, 245 Stanton Mountain Road, Lebanon, NJ, 08833.

Inurnment private. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Haddon Heights at a later date.
