Obituary for Daniel J Riley

Riley, Daniel J., 92 years of Thorofare, NJ passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2022. He was born and raised in Lowell, MA, where he received the benefit of a Catholic education, he learned the value of work at an early age as he and his siblings were raised throughout the Great Depression. In 1952, after receiving a letter from President Truman, he entered the US Army and served at an Army base in Paulsboro, NJ during the Korean war. “Danny” was always proud to say “no Koreans ever invaded Paulsboro.” It was here that he met and fell in love with Mary “Libbie” DeHart at a USO dance. They were married on May 15, 1954 and moved onto the DeHart family farm, where they would raise their family and happily live out their years.

Danny worked 33 years for Heritage Dairy in Thorofare. First as a milkman going door to door, then in their milk plant, and finally as a store manager and a store delivery man. On October 10, 1957 Danny along with Windy Heritage made the first delivery of milk to Heritage’s first store. Retiring in 1995, Danny remained close to the Heritage family and proudly attended the annual company picnics as the last surviving door-to-door milk man. Mr. Riley was proud of his Irish heritage and he and his wife took several trips to Ireland where he was thrilled to kiss the Blarney stone and annually celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. In his younger years Danny enjoyed trips to Jackman, ME to deer hunt and, in later years, to enjoy the serenity of the Moose River Valley and enjoy his favorite meal of a well-done filet mignon
with a baked potato. An avid painter and woodworker, his motto was “measure twice cut once.”

Mr. Riley is survived by his four children, who all resembled the milkman: Elizabeth (Jack) Baldwin of National Park, Timothy of Pilesgrove, NJ, Kathleen (Cory) Robinson of South Newfane VT and Patrick (Christine) of Thorofare, He
was most proud of his eleven grandchildren Amy, Jeff, and Adam Baldwin, Zach, Molly and Seamus Riley, Stephen, Seth and Suzannah Kunkle, Chelsey and Danny Riley, as well as his eight great grandchildren. Mr. Riley is also
survived by his Brother Walter (Jane) Riley of Tyngsboro, MA and sister Judith (James) Gebo of Methuen, MA. his sisters-in-law Sue DeHart, Lois L. DeHart and Ann (James) Hamel as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.
Mr. Riley was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years Mary “Libbie”, his sister Dorothy Ranall brother Robert Riley and daughter-in- law Kathleen Riley.
