Obituary for Doris Marie Damminger (Vile)
On October 4, 2020, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother Doris Marie Damminger (nee Vile) passed away peacefully and went home to be with The Lord. Doris was born April 6, 1924, in South Jersey to Edward and Irene Vile (nee Krug), where she married Oscar “Ockie” Damminger and raised her four children before retiring to Florida.
Doris was a devout Catholic and very involved in the Church. She was never without the Holy Rosary nearby whether it was in her purse, the car, or bedside table; however, her most cherished Holy Rosary was gifted to her by her beloved Ockie on their wedding day, May 22, 1942. Doris always prayed for all of us and kept a list, so she missed no one.
Many referred to her as “Mom” or “Grandmom,” and you didn’t need to be related to her to be a part of her family. She always greeted everyone with a smile and made them feel welcome. With every birthday and Christmas card, she always took the time to write a personal note in each one, letting us all know she loved us, finishing with her signature, “God bless.”
Doris enjoyed playing games, watching her soaps, doing crossword puzzles, and going to the movies. Most of all, she enjoyed visits with her loved ones. Many of these past visits included going to Lloyd’s Beach, where she taught all of us to float with our heads up and feet out. More recently, these visits included “Grandmom” beating us all at Mexican Train or Phase10 and then a dinner out followed by a night at the movies.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Oscar (1974), and her two sons Patrick (2016), and Edward (2005). She is survived by her son Michael (Carol) Damminger, her daughter Irene (Jerry) Vinciguerra, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doris leaves a legacy of love, faith, happiness, and always exercising your right to vote as a Democrat.
We will celebrate a Funeral Mass at 11am on Saturday, October 10th at St. Margaret's Church (Infant Jesus Parish) 845 Third St., Woodbury Heights, NJ. A viewing will be held 9AM to 10:30 AM at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street. Mantua, NJ. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the American Heart Assoc. or St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Outreach, 5700 Bell Terre Parkway, Palm Coast, Fl. 32164
