Condolence From: Daniel O'Neill
Condolence: Where do I begin? Dr. Culbert was one of my earliest influences as I began my musical journey. He was my marching band director for 5 years. However, after reading this wonderful tribute, it is clear that I really didn't know just amazing a man that he was. I've been a music teacher for 14 years now. And I've lost count of the number of times that I spoke about him to my students. Always a wealth of knowledge, as well as patience, "Doc" was such an inspiration for all of my fellow classmates. Recently, I was speaking with other music teachers at an Honors Band event, and found out that some of them were also Dr. Culbert's former students. It was really a treat to hear their stories of how he was as a teacher. Although it saddens me that he is no longer with us physically, I know that my memories of him, as well as his influence, will be with me forever. Thank you for everything "Doc"! Condolence From: Dawn Minix Hartwell
Condolence: RIP Doc. What an inspirational man! My fondest memories are the years I spent in the Clearview Regional High School Band. Doc had a way of making everyone of us realize our potential and use it to the best of our abilities. Each one of us were important and he never missed a chance to tell us just that. The countless hours of drilling and practices that lasted in to the dark. Practicing in the back parking lot by the light of our parents' vehicles to make sure we got every detail just right! His smile was contagious! He made us champions and I will never forget him. He always asked for me when he encountered my parents. I am honored to have been taught by Doc and to have shared my time at Clearview with such a great man and musician! Thank you for everything you did for all of us! I will miss you. Love you Doc Culbert! My thoughts and prayers to all the family.

Condolence From: Jim Canna - class of 1964
Condolence: I have been a teacher for over 40 years. Mr. Culbert was my band director at Clearview during its first 4 years. He has had a direct influence on both my life, as well as how I teach. He taught all who had him never to quit on yourself. That you could do anything, accomplish anything, you attempted. He was a teacher's teacher! A good & kind man, and he will be missed.

Condolence From: Cheryl Conaway Schumacher
Condolence: Dr. Culbert taught my dad at Paulboro High. Years later I would be in the Clearview High Band playing the flute. He taught my sister the clairnet and my other sister was in the color guard. My mom was a band booster parent and also helped sew flags for the color guard. What I am trying to say is that Dr. Culbert gave my family a love of music. When I had children of my own I passed down the love I have for music. Dr. Culbert made band fun and challenging. I can still play Fanfare in F. I have many fond memories of being in Dr. Culbert's marching band.

Condolence: I always enjoyed talking with Mike, possibly because of his remaining "Dutchy" accent -- he reminded me of my Dad (from Lebanon)who never entirely lost his, either. A truly interesting and talented man; really devoted to his work and kids (school). It was great to share our original heritage. He'll really be missed.

Condolence: I was saddened to see the obituary for Michael. I always wanted to meet him, but never did. I am the eldest son of the OTHER Culbert family in Gloucester County, when we lived in Greenfields Village. To Michael's family, I really appreciate your sharing of his full life through his obituary. I was interested to note that he organized the County marching band cavalcade, in which I participated with West Deptford High School. I also note his interest in family history and travel, which are also interests of mine.

Condolence From: Lisa Bron Myers - Class of '80
Condolence: As the years have gone by (30 some now) since I graduated from Clearview, I have lost many of my memories. However, I have never lost my memories of Dr. Culbert and my time as one of his band members. I have thought of him often and fondly remember the man that gave me a reason to "be". Such a kind, caring, considerate, understanding and inspiring individual. He never gave up on me while I tried to give up on myself. I am forever indebted to him and can only hope he knew what an influence on my life he really was. His legacy will never be forgotten as there are way too many lives he has touched for that to be a possibility. My thoughts and prayers to the Culbert family and to Doc's extended "band family". May he rest in Peace.

Condolence From: Barry Dirkin
Condolence: P: Oooh Peggy, I'm so sad for you and your family. When I think about your dad, I think of the title "Renaissance Man." And now that I come to think about it, your dad is the very first person that I've known in my life who truly has that particular nomenclature applied to him. A wonderful teacher of the arts, a lover of all creatures great and small.... he and your mom were the first people that I knew who not only cared about ecology and our environment, but led the way in doing something about it by driving a VW Beetle looooooong before it became fashionable...... and into personal fitness looooog before it became popular. Loading up two bicycles and peddling across the country without the benefit of an organized support tour!!! Who does that? Your mom and dad do. All of the lives that they touched are enriched. What better legacy can anyone have..... love, b. ps... If you haen't heard it or played it, go to iTunes and download Dan Fogelberg's song "Leader of the Band." It's exactly about your dad.

Condolence From: Denise Ibbotson
Condolence: Dear Peggy, The Lord called his name quickly and He knows best. You and your family are in my prayers as always, as you prepare for his services. My only regret is that I did not have more time to know him in this life, but I look forward to meeting him again. I can literally see our dads (as in a vision from the Lord) becoming friends as I am writing this, and the two of them talking about their daughters to one another. They are smiling (beaming) and proud and so happy that we share a friendship here. There is bright light all around them. We will be waiting to hear from you. Much love, Denise

Condolence: We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Culbert. He was such a huge part of our high school years as band members. He expected alot from us but always disciplined with love. We are honored that he played the organ at our wedding 24 years ago, and because of his influence, all 3 of our daughters are musical. Two of them have already been in Clearview's Marching Band, a legacy we are proud to have been a part of. Our sympathies go out to Mrs. Culbert and his family at this difficult time. Condolence From: Bev (Bunting) Kenworthy
Condolence: Hi Peg, Hope you are all coping well, and that there is some comfort in his peace. What I gained through association with your Dad and the band was self-respect, ggo friends, good grades, and my parents never realized that someone else had that influence over me. Being a part of the band taught me to work with others, whether I liked them or not, and this is a great skill that I have used well in life. As a parent and a part of the Band Auxiliary, it was fun to work with the other parents and staff, but again, his watchful eye kept people in line as needed. It was also a great experience working with him in a different capacity. I was delighted that my own kids had him as a teacher for a short while before he retired, and that they too, learned about not only music, but a little about life from him. It is hard to believe that this "rock" of a man is no longer with us, but I hope it brings comfort to you and your fmaily to know of the many lives he had such a great and positive effect on. We did not all become musicians, but most of us became good, responsible, caring adults. Love, Bev (C.R.H.S. Class of 1973)

Condolence: Dear Esther and family, I met Mike during my student teaching experience at Clearview. When I was hired for the librarian's job in the high school, Mike became my mentor. I learned so much from him. My 25 years of working with him as the band front instructor were wonderful. It is an experience that made me richer as a person and a better teacher. I will never forget the profound influence he had on my life. Always remember your good times with Mike and know that he will always be in your hearts.

Condolence From: Mabel (Reim) Meyer
Condolence: To Mrs. Culbert, Peggy, Jim and Ed: please know that I was so very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Culbert last Sunday. There could never be a kinder, more genteel or caring individual than he, and I am so privileged to have studied under him! In today's world we hear of all kinds of abuse heaped upon students by their teachers; Dr. Culbert was so above-board that he never even shut his office door when he taught lessons. I have been reading, both with interest and amusement, the various reflections of so many former Clearview band members. Over the span of 32 years, hundreds of students walked through the doors of room 203, each with their own special memories of Band, Marching Band, Dance Band (back when we played the "old standards" for the Band Auxiliary's Annual Adult Dance in the 1960's), and Stage Band. One of my funniest memories was playing an Adult Dance where one member wasn't there on time. Dr. Culbert held off as long as he could, and we finally started playing, minus a tenor sax player. On about the third number, he came walking in as we played "Call Me Irresponsible." Dr. Culbert could barely control his laughter! The one common thread uniting all of us through the years is that Dr. Culbert was a constant inspiration to the power of music in our lives. He was a master of his trade, something I learned keenly when I went off to college as a sax major in the fall of 1969. "Mr." Culbert (yes, that dates a lot of us, because we were in deep distress when he took a sabbatical leave of absence during the second half of our senior year to begin working on his doctorate!) tried his hardest to teach me vibrato. It sounded so awful that I was embarrassed, and basically refused to attempt it. Besides, he was a trombone player, I figured, so what did he know about producing vibrato on the saxophone?! Off to college I went, and the first thing my sax teacher told me was I needed to use vibrato. I told him "I already tried that and didn't like it." He said I'd either learn to use it, or couldn't be a sax major, and then proceeded to teach it to me exactly the way Dr. Culbert had! I recognized the "Let's take it from the top" line someone mentioned earlier as one of his favorite sayings. I'd add another: "Sit up straight, both feet on the floor!" Dr. Culbert truly was a "teacher's teacher." I remember stopping by CRHS during my first year as a band director. He asked how things were going, and if I had any problems. I told him a couple of things I was having trouble teaching, and he gave me some tips, reassuring me that they were 'common problems for music educators.' I went back to school the next day, tried out his suggestions, and they worked! Just a few years back we talked at the Memorial Day parade in Mantua, and he again offered some advice as he reflected on various issues he had had to resolve over the years. My own two children never had the opportunity to play under his direction, but they still benefited from the fact that he was the cooperating teacher for Mr. Tomlin's student teaching days. When my son was in the Middle School, he had several questions to be answered for his G&T class. All concerned the "early days at CRHS," and I didn't know many of the answers. We walked into Boston Market, and there was Dr. Culbert, enjoying his lunch. I was so thrilled to introduce Bobby to MY band director! When he heard that Bobby was a bassoonist, he took the time to encourage him and ask questions about his musical interests, then sat there patiently answering question after question for him. His lunch got cold as he adamantly told Bobby the story of how Clearview's colors came to be green, white and gold, bemoaning the fact that the high school now uses a 2-color scheme, even though the Alma Mater (which HE wrote!) clearly states "upward the green, the white and gold! I could write forever, but I know someone else will remember many of these same stories. Thanks to all of your family for allowing us to be his family, too. Just like you, we'll carry our memories of a very special man for the rest of our lives. May God comfort you with His ever-abiding presence and peace throughout the coming days. Condolence From: James Anderson
Condolence: Dear Peggy, Thank you for the update.... but I do wish that the news could have been more encouraging. These are extremely difficult times for you and your mother; our prayers and our concerns go out to you two. Knowing your dad as I did in the West Chester days, he was in fact a very well-directed, concerned, and compassionate individual. He was hard-working: I remember that he had a late evening job in downtown West Chester cleaning up a store after closing hours.... I think it was called "Draper's Smoke Shop," and I know that they served ice cream, sundaes, and that sort of thing. I went there quite frequently and helped him with the cleanup; then we would sit in one of the booths and enjoy a sundae or the like..... and solve the problems of the world..... and our own. Good times, and never to be forgotten. Later in our young lives, your dad was staioned at Fort Rucker, an Army helicopter base in Alabama. I was a Naval cadet in Pensacola, Florida, and drove my motorcycle up to Alabama on a weekend and spent the night at Fort Rucker chatting with your dad into the wee hours of the morning.[What your dad had going for him was the love and dedication that he received from your mom and from you; I feel that he was aware that you both were there to help and to support him.] I salute you both. Love to all, Jim Anderson from Ivyland, PA. (also "Best Man" in your dad's wedding on May 26, 1951)

Condolence From: Peggy Culbert
Condolence: I would just like to note two really great things about my Dad, in my opinion: 1.)I never saw my Dad (or Mom) drinking alcoholic beverages. But I did see him happy and having a great time most all of the time. In other words, there was NO NEED for alcohol to have a great time! (With Music, Family, Friends, Nature, and Church, what MORE could anyone want?) 2.)I never heard my Dad tell a joke that was not tasteful. Sometimes folks would say, "oh, corny," but I was always so PROUD of his sensibilities in this area. I would take "corny" any day of the week.... 3.)There was never anything more important to my Dad than the person in front of him at any given moment. There was no TV Show, book, or agenda that was more important than a friend or family member coming in the house at any given time. He would give you his entire attention. He would just love to sit down and listen to anything you had to say. He was ready to help and to encourage if needed. He loved people, and loved when folks made positive connections with each other. I really hope to follow your example in these and in many other areas. This is part of how I would like to continue to honor you, Dad. Thanks, Dad! XOXOX

Condolence: There are many memories, but here are a couple.Mike was a positive person in every sense of the word. He saw only what you could do and refused to let you you settle for an excuse why you couldn't do something. He pushed me,from the time I was 12 years old,to go for everything I wanted to accomplish, even when I thought I couldn't do it.Audition for S. Jersey when I was a freshman and thought I didn't have a chance? Got it. Learn enough piano skills to make it as a music major? Got it.Audition for college on tuba, but remember I had also started to learn bass, so audition on that, too, just in case? Got it. Play tuba again after a 25 year professional layoff? And do it with a terrific brass ensemble? Got it.Always positive---that was my musical training. Is it any wonder I tried to teach others the same way during my career?

Condolence: When I was first hired at Clearview in 1985, Mike was one of the first to reach out to me as a new teacher. I think we had a special bond because of our love for birding. We would often share our experiences and when I found out he did not have a decent bird book, I bought him his first National Geographic bird book to use. He reciprocated the gift by giving me a crystal Blue Bird which I still have to this day. Every time I pick it up I think of him. I often regret, Not keeping in touch once he retired, but I just want him to know that I always think of him.

Condolence: He was my band director and a great musician. I have many fond memories of Dr. Culbert standing on the top of the school buildings with his microphone box telling us to move left, or move right to get the band show just right. I remember him always smiling and joking with the kids, the band hall was always a fun place to hang out and it was because of Dr. Culbert. I will miss him with many other students.

Condolence: I was at J. Mason Tomlin Elementary School in Mantua, when Dr. Culbert came to organize us into a Marching Band along with the kids from Harrison Twnp. I think we marched in the Wenonah and Pitman parades behind a banner that said The New Clearview Regional High School Marching Band. I like to say that I was in that Band for "7" years.

Condolence: From my Mom: Alice (Rumpf) Cress: I remember Mickey as a very special cousin. I will miss him. From Ann & Family: Although I've long known of Mickey's celebrated career as an educator and musician, my memories are of the keeper of our family history. He never ran out of Rumpf family stories and was happy to lead us in singing those beloved old songs at our annual reunions. He leaves a spot that no one can fill quite like he did especially as we approach the 100th reunion in 2017. We also enjoyed his and Esther's stories of their many travels. I will always remember him with a twinkle in his eye, a huge smile and a ready song. Thank you Mickey for nurturing my love of family. Our love and sympathy to Esther, Peggy, Jim, Ed,Dawn, Chris and families.

My dearest memory is of the day I buried my Mother and he came up to me at the Church-Smiled at me and took my hand. He had a very peaceful, comforting look on his face and he spoke to my so comforting. I will never forget the moment. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Condolence From: Peggy Culbert
Condolence: I'd just like to mention that Dad's care-givers at "Assisted Living," various hospitals, and the "Shady Lane County Home" all seemed to notice similar things about him, even though his abilities were very much diminished. It was a common theme to hear the following: "He has such a great smile." "He is so handsome." "I just love his beautiful white hair." "He looks JUST like a favorite relative of mine (husband, father, grand-father)." "I can tell he has a heart of gold." "I can tell that he is intelligent." "He's my favorite." There were care-givers at each place that seemed to take a special "liking" to Dad, and really went out of their way to give him extra and special attention. Also, one evening when I went to visit at "Shady Lane," the nurses stopped me and exclaimed that he was their HERO. Someone started to fall, and Dad, in his wheel-chair quickly put his arm out, thus preventing the person from falling. I mentioned that I wasn't surprised about this, as I had remembered him on more than a few occasions at the N.J. Shore, (and at other shore points in the U.S.) running toward the ocean in order to "rescue" a child or young person from the waves....... children and young folks that were not being properly watched by their parents.....

Condolence: Although Dad was losing his ability to communicate more and more in the past 2 years, he basically did NOT lose his desire to encourage and express appreciation. I was with him numerous times in the past 8 months of residing at hospitals and several facilities, signalling various workers and care-givers that he would like to speak with them. Then he would give a big smile, and to the best of his ability, try to express to them that they were doing a GREAT job and that he really appreciated what they were doing. [I knew exactly what he was trying to do and told the workers to the best of my knowledge, based on many years of past experience with Dad, the positive feelings and encouragement to them that he was trying to express.]

Condolence: I would like to share this poem written for my Dad on the occasion of his retirement from Clearview Regional H.S. in 1992. It was written by a fellow member of the C.R.H.S. Class of 1973, Wendy Wilkins Valdez. Here it is: LIFESONG: Music is your life's blood. It's heartbeat a rhythm that flows and feeds. But not you only. Like a transfusion, it has given us new life. We are caught in its current. We cannot help but enjoy its warmth. W.W.V. @June, 1992

Condolence: My family sends our deepest sympathy to Dr. Culbert's loved ones. He was such an important part of our developing years. I know my experiences as a Clearview band member(mid 80's)have helped to shape the woman I have become. Dr. Culbert's influence has fostered my passion for music, my persistent appreciation for all marching bands, and my eventual transition into the field of education. I realize that a few words of reflection can to little to assuage the pain of loss. However, it must ease the spirit to know that Dr. Culbert's words, music and magic have impacted so many in such a profound way.

Condolence: Here is a favorite saying of Mike's/Dad's regarding "The Appalachian Trail." (the 2,100 mile trail that spans the mountains from Maine to Georgia) "The Appalachian Trail" Remote for detachment, Narrow for chosen company, Winding for leisure, Lonely for contemplation. The trail leads not only North or South, but upward to the Body, Mind, and Soul of Man." by Harold Allen

Condolence: On Saturday, April 21,2012, the "Salem County Brass Society" held their 37th Annual Spring Concert at the Salem Community College in Carney's Point, N.J. Mike/Dad had been a part of this group in the recent past 10 years. The Group dedicated the entire concert to him, and specifically dedicated the hymn, "It is Well With My Soul" to him. It was absolutely beautifully done. On the hard-copy programs, they had his picture, along with a beautiful dedication, which read:"In Memory of Dr. Michael E. Culbert. The Salem County Brass Society would like to respectfully dedicate this concert to the memory of Dr. Michael E. Culbert, D.M.A. He passed away on March 25, 2012.'Dr. Mike' was a trombonist, assistant conductor, band president, and librarian for the Brass Society for many years and was awarded our highest honor upon his retirement from the group, the 'Life Member Award.' Those of us who were privileged to have known him found that he was the consummate musician. Even more importantly, he was also the consummate man to look to for advice, to ease a tense situation with wit and wisdom, to accomplish what needed to be done. He was overwhelmingly positive at all times and, with his encouragement, we were able to attain things which we thought impossible. 'Dr. Mike' was a dfference-maker and he will be sorely missed by the Salem County Brass Society."

Condolence: On Sunday, May 20, 2012, the Youth Group at Mike's/Dad's church dedicated their annual Sunday Service to his memory, along with 2 other individuals. In the dedication, it was stated that "Mike Culbert was a devoted, passionate, and deeply spiritual person. He was a fervent supporter of the youth group and is dearly missed. Mike's quiet, yet powerful nod of approval always gave us the confidence we needed and reassured us that we were doing more than 'okay.' In his eyes, we were the young mission that would enable this church to continue long into the future. Mike's shining example of Christian spirit, love, and faith is the inspiration that keeps us aspiring to do our best for this church and for humanity. We are thankful and blessed to have had him, an amazing angel, by our sides and we give glory to God for the opportunity to have known him." In the acknowledgement of the three youth group graduating seniors, it was stated: "They will continue to teach others by example, holding on to the values that have been instilled in them, mirroring, for example, the modesty and intelligence of a Mike Culbert."

Condolence From:

Condolence: Dr. Culbert was such a special person in so many ways - as a teacher, as a leader and as a friend. He inspired and encouraged us, and brought out the best in us. He was a patient, caring man who always made time for us. I have so many good memories from concert band, marching band and stage band. He taught us so much and will never be forgotten. Sue and I send our deepest sympathies. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Culbert family, Mrs. Culbert, Peg, Jim and Eddie.

Condolence: To make Dad's obituary a little more complete, I would like to add that Dad (and Mom) were members of "The Outdoor Club of Southern New Jersey" and "The Gloucester County Nature Club." In addition, on behalf of myself and my family, I would sincerely like to thank each person that provided an entry or "candle" here, signed the Gloucester County Times Obituary "Guest-book," sent cards and tangible gifts, and that attended the visitation, "Witness to the Resurrection Service," grave-side service, or luncheon. Please know that we appreciate everything that you have done, and we definitely love you all.
