Obituary for Glenn Heard Jr.

Harry Glenn Heard, Jr., age 73, of Mantua passed away February 20, 2016 with his family by his side. Born in Upper Darby, PA, he served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1967 as a jet engine mechanic, having served during the Vietnam War. Dedicated to protecting his community, he was active in the Centre City Volunteer Fire Company starting in 1972, his last position as Assistant Chief. He also held the position of Fire Marshall for Mantua Township and was a member of the Centre City Emergency Squad. He is also a life member of the NJ State Fireman’s Association. He spent part of his career as Deputy Director of the Gloucester County Communication Center, having played an integral part in its 1980 launch as what was then an innovative county-wide 9-1-1 system.
He is survived by wife Marcy (Reed) and 5 children, Michael (Sonya) Heard of Glassboro, Kelly Heard of Marlton, Chris Heard of Mantua, Scott Heard of Austin, TX, and Greg Heard of Mantua; along with 5 grandchildren, Courtney, Zachary, Mary Kate, Alex and Lauren; as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Aubrey and (expected March 20th) Amelia. He was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen.
Family and friends may visit Friday, February 26, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Mantua. A brief service will follow at 7 p.m... In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Glenn’s name to the Gloucester County Animal Shelter.
