Obituary for Heand J. Silvestri

Heand (Han) J. (nee Johns) Silvestri, 84, of Wenonah, NJ & Ocean City, NJ passed away peacefully on October 26th surrounded by her family, at her most recent residence, The Shores at Wesley Manor in Ocean City, NJ.

Han was the beloved wife of Anthony J. Silvestri; sister of the late Cecilia Keehan; doting mother to (deceased) Joseph G. Silvestri (Sondra), and Jeffrey T. Silvestri (Andrea); devoted grandmother to Mackenzie, Anthony, and Reagan; and a favorite aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA to parents Joseph and Rose Johns, Han graduated from G.A.R. High School in 1956 before attending Penn State University where she both received her Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1960 and met her future husband, Anthony. Anthony and Han married in August of 1960 before settling briefly in Anthony's childhood home in Glassboro, NJ. The family then moved to Lower Makefield, PA where Han taught elementary school for the Morrisville School district at both Capitol View and M.R. Reiter schools from 1972 until 1980. Han absolutely loved teaching, and many of her students remained in touch with her, a testimony to her connection with her students.

In 1980, Han and her family moved to Wenonah, NJ, where she continued her teaching career before joining the volunteer staff at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, NJ. Han's outgoing personality and creative skills gave her opportunities to serve the hospital and its patients in numerous capacities. She also donated her time and efforts to the alumni and students of Penn State (where the sun rose and set, according to Han!)

Han was filled with life and love, and she enjoyed her many interests. She was a photographer and painter, held cooking classes, and played the organ, to name several. From late spring until early fall, Han preferred to live at their condo in Ocean City, where she could be found every day during the warmer months strolling or scootering on the boardwalk, meeting with her friends, and enjoying concerts at the Music Pier.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 1st from 6 pm to 8 pm and on Wednesday, November 2nd, from 9 am to 10:15 am at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Mantua, New Jersey. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd, at 11 am at Our Lady, Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 161 Pitman Avenue, Pitman, NJ. Interment in suburban Wilkes-Barre will be at the convenience of the family. Memories & condolences can be shared at www.smithfhmantua.com
