Obituary for Helen Scull (Valentine)

Helen Valentine Scull, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at Cooper University Hospital at age 70. Helen was born in Camden, New Jersey to William and Mary Valentine, and was a resident of Glassboro, where she lived for most of her life. She had retired from Rowan University, where she was employed in administration for nearly thirty years.
Beloved wife of Bruce E. Scull Sr., she is also survived by her children Jimmy Caple, Justin M. Caple (Rachel Possinger), Bruce Scull Jr. (Dee), and Lauren Connell (Kris), her grandchildren Rhiannon, Evan, Alex, Sophie, Tori, Trey, Ross, and Liam, sister Diane Thomas (Gomer), brother Paul Valentine (Marie), and many nieces, nephews, and their families. Helen was predeceased by her brother William.
Helen adored her family, and she especially enjoyed showing it through her love of baking, including cookies, cakes, and pies for everyone’s delight. Treasured weekends were spent watching nieces, nephews, and grandchildren dancing, playing hockey, and playing soccer. Helen and Bruce also welcomed into their home students from Rowan, hosting them for dinner each year, and Helen loved and cared for them like her own children. An avid traveler, Helen looked forward throughout the year to the annual anniversary trip she and Bruce celebrated in Maine, traveling to the same bed and breakfast each year to appreciate the scenery, spend time with friends, and enjoy plenty of lobsters, beer, and wine. She also took annual trips throughout the country with a group of her longtime childhood friends. In retirement, Helen and Bruce loved visiting breweries and local wineries with family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to visit between the hours of 9:30 am to 12:00 pm on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Smith Funeral Home, located at 47 Main Street in Mantua, New Jersey (08051), followed by a graveside service to be held at 1:00 pm that afternoon at Eglington Cemetery 320 Kings Highway in Clarksboro, New Jersey (08020). Friends are also invited to meet solely at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory can be made to the Rowan University Foundation, which will benefit students in need. Gifts may be made to: The Helen Scull Memorial 201 Mullica Hill Road
