Obituary for James R. Miller

James R. Miller age 87 passed away Friday, December 18th, 2020.
Born in Verga, NJ to Roy and Grace Miller, James was a proud resident of Wenonah, NJ since 1957. James was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 57 years, Shirley Mae. Beloved father of Linda Sheehan from Wenonah and Judy Leary (Charles) from Wenonah. James was adored by his grandchildren Michael, Linda, Canice (Ryan), Misty (Bobby), Jack (Kim), Brenna (Brendon), Krissy (Stephen), and 10 great-grandchildren. Loving brother to the late Geraldine Parker (William) and Thomas (Jean).
James served in the U.S. Army guarding prisoners on base, graduated from Glassboro State (Rowan University), and became a police officer for the Wenonah Police Department in 1957. In 1959 he was promoted to Chief of Police, where he would serve 39 years as Wenonah Chief of Police, holding the title of longest running chief of police in the state of New Jersey. James and his late wife Shirley had previously owned Miller’s Luncheonette in West Deptford.
James went by many names, Jim, Jimmy, Chief, and was fondly called Ugg by his grandchildren. He was our ‘Robert Redford’. After retirement, he became the designated family dishwasher and Shirley was always the cook. He was an avid camper always onto the next adventure. He loved watching ‘Cheers’ and ‘Seinfeld’, and enjoyed fishing, tinkering in his garage and spending time with his family. During is service in the Army, he enjoyed boxing as well.
James is remembered by his loved ones as the patriarch to his family. He was more than just a father and grandfather, he was a friend of many, and a father figure, teaching us how to fish, change a tire, welding, how to ride a bike, and how to make the perfect egg. He never missed an important milestone in our lives, being there for our first drivers tests, graduations, weddings, births, and in hard times, being the stoic comfort, support, and shoulder we all needed. Military Honors and graveside service will be 2PM Wednesday Dec. 23rd at Wenonah Cemetery.
