Obituary for John Scott Conway

John Scott Conway Jr., 64, of Wenonah, NJ, passed away peacefully at Inspira Medical Center in Mullica Hill, NJ, on December 8, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on June 15, 1959 to Jack Conway and Mary Schofield Conway, Scott grew up in Cedar Grove, NJ. He was the grandson of William I. Conway, mayor of Wenonah from 1945-1959.  Scott graduated from Montclair-Kimberly Academy in 1977 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 1982. After graduation, Scott moved to southern California where he worked as an engineer for Hughes Aircraft, later Raytheon, for 32 years. He married Wendy Lee Ehlers in 1988, and they were married for 33 years.

A longtime resident of Torrance, CA, Scott returned to New Jersey after his retirement in 2014, settling in Wenonah in 2016. He enjoyed maintaining his town’s hiking trails as a member of the Wenonah Environmental Commission, building many of the boardwalks and bridges used by hikers today. He took great care in keeping the Mantua Creek Trail free of litter and debris. He was also a member of the Wenonah Historical Society.

Scott was an avid car enthusiast and restored multiple classic cars over the course of his life, including a 1931 Model A pickup and multiple Pontiac Firebirds, winning several trophies at car shows.  He also loved doing woodworking, expertly crafting many pieces of furniture and undertaking countless home renovation projects. Throughout his life, he enjoyed taking road trips and went on numerous cross-country adventures with his friends, wife, and daughter. He followed the NY Mets and NY Giants, but his favorite sport was NASCAR. Known for his kind and helpful nature, Scott extended his generosity to both people and animals, always keeping a bowl of peanuts ready to feed the numerous squirrels that frequented his backyard.

Scott is predeceased by his father Jack, and is survived by his daughter Lauren, his brother Bruce (Zeynep), his nephew Kevin Tolga, his sister Nancy Hermann (Don), and his mother Mary.

A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Mantua, NJ 08051 on December 16th at 12 pm, with visitation beginning at 10:30am. Following the service, the family invites attendees to join them for lunch at their Wenonah home.
