Obituary for Joseph Frederick Heaney Jr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Frederick "Fred" Heaney Jr., who died peacefully at home in Wenonah, NJ on December 23, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was born on October 8, 1930 in Runnemede, NJ, the son of Joseph Frederick Heaney Sr. and Elsie Ruth Heaney (nee Teears). He was the beloved husband of Ruth Elaine Heaney (nee Wilent) for 50 years, until her passing in 2006. He was the devoted father of Cynthia J. Lapp, Bradley G. Heaney, Neil D. Heaney, and the late Joseph F. Heaney III. He is survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A proud veteran, Fred served in the Korean War as a Quartermaster with the U.S. Marine Corps. Fred loved spending summers in Ocean City, NJ, at his beach house where his extended family liked to congregate.

Fred graduated from Glassboro High School and retired as a General Foreman in Industrial Insulation at AC & S, where he was the longest serving employee at the time of his retirement. He was actively involved in his community, serving on the Gateway Regional High School Board of Education and as a leader in Boy Scout Troop 50 of Wenonah. He was also an elder and Sunday school teacher at Spirit Life Fellowship Church, and after his retirement, he served as the Oasis Soup Kitchen Director.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Fred's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org) or Click here to donate online

A memorial service for Fred will be held on Friday, December 30, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Spirit Life Fellowship Church, located at 424 E. Broadway in Salem, NJ. The service will be immediately followed by a dinner reception in the Ruth Heaney Fellowship Hall.

Fred was a hardworking and dedicated man, who was known for his strong work ethic, his kindness and generosity, and his love of laughter and good company. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and he will be deeply missed.

Fred's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
