Obituary for Kenneth N. Mele

Kenneth N.  Mele
Kenneth N. Mele, age 76, of Sewell, died Wednesday, December 30, 2015. Born March 13, 1939 in Bristol, PA, son of Nicholas & Viola Mele. He married Sarah Perkins on May 7, 1961. Living in NJ, he graduated from Trenton State College and became an elementary teacher and principal, while also the leader and guitarist in a local band, Kenny and the Showmen. The group played at local nightspots and, on occasion, opened for performers including Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Jr., and Dr. Irwin Corey.

Ken moved to Lafayette, IN in the late 1980s, accepting a new Field Representative position with Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. After his wife passed away, he returned to NJ, residing in Wenonah and serving as guidance counselor and vice-principal at Monongahela Middle School. He Married JoAnn Swartz Thornton on November 20, 1993 and eventually accepted concurrent elementary principal-ships at Pine Acres, New Sharon, and Central schools. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6364.

Survived by his wife JoAnn. his son, Marty Mele of San Diego, CA, his daughter, Polly Mele of Preston, AR, six grandchildren, and a great grandchild. Ken was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Glathorn.

Family & friends may visit on Tuesday, January 5th from 12 to 1 PM at the Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Mantua where a funeral service will be held at 1 PM. Burial will take place on Thursday, January 7th at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Trenton at 1 PM. Memories & condolences may be shared at www.smithfhmantua.com
