Obituary for Marie C. Baker (Toner)

Marie C. Baker (Toner)
Marie Constance Baker (nee Toner) Age 85 of Mantua, NJ went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 11, 2020. Born February 14, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pa., to Francis and Marie Toner (nee Corley). Marie attended John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia, and was predeceased by her two older brothers Joseph and Francis. She was a US Women’s Army Corp (WAC) veteran having served in Germany during the Korean War Era where she met her fellow service member and future husband Robert. Marie also had the unique opportunity to perform as a singer with the USO while stationed overseas, and often reflected on this experience
Like so many women of her generation she was very active in her community and in the lives of her children. She was a Sunday School Teacher, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Church Youth Leader, Choir Member, and for a time pursued a professional operatic singing career, having debuted her soprano voice at Carnegie Hall.
In later years, Marie worked at CBS Records in Pitman, as a credit union loan officer. She also became actively involved in community theatre having appeared in numerous Sketch Club Players of Woodbury productions, and in the direction of SCP children’s plays as well.
Marie and her late husband of 59 years Robert A Baker, Sr. were active members at The First Assembly of God Church, Carneys Point. She enjoyed writing and directing many church presentations most notable of which were the annual Christmas live nativity and Easter passion play productions. For over 60 years, her church life defined her life, and whether it was participating in a weekly Bible Study, Intercessory Prayer, Women’s Ministry endeavors, Vacation Bible School, or teaching Adult Sunday School - this was her spiritual calling.
Marie is survived by her loving and faithful children Robert Jr. of Woodbury, NJ, Bonnie of Mantua, NJ, and Melinda of Mantua, NJ. She is also survived by her Brother-in-law Jay Harold Baker, of Clifton NJ, as well as nieces Janeen Baker of Wayne, NJ, Jana Dufour (Gordon) of Pompton Lakes, NJ and Gail Trotter (Tom) of Richlandtown, Pa. In addition to nephews Daniel Toner of Riverton, NJ and Douglas Toner of Philadelphia, Pa., she is survived by cousins Ronald and Alice Corey of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., – and many extended family members young and old.
She will be remembered as a caring and loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, cousin, good neighbor, and a very colorful lady, having made many friends and acquaintances in the course of her life. But most importantly Marie will be remembered as a faithful servant to her Lord.
In lieu of flowers a foreign mission offering in memory of Marie can be made to – First Assembly of God Church 380 Georgetown Rd., Carneys Point, NJ 08069.
