Obituary for Mildred O. Baldwin (Owen)

She always said that tea and chocolate were the key to longevity - that’s why she enjoyed both at dinner every night. While the tea and chocolate helped her celebrate 104 years of healthy living, we were deeply saddened to discover that they could not keep her with us forever. Mildred, also known by her loved ones as “GG,” got her angel’s wings on February 5, 2020, surrounded by love at her home in Mannington Township, New Jersey.
Mildred was born to Oscar and Mary Emma (Gooden) Owen in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, on July 7, 1915. She grew up in Mullica Hill, NJ, loved dearly by her parents and adoring her older brother, Howard. She attended Academy Street School, Glassboro; Union Academy for elementary school; Glassboro High School; and was part of the first graduating class of New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro to earn a 4-year degree in teaching. Mildred taught 5th and 3rd grade students at Harrison Township Elementary School for 25 years and was known by her students and co-workers as Mrs. Moore. She was a great teacher, both inside and outside of the classroom, always with a lesson to be taught, advice to be given, and an ear for listening. Mildred was a life-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Mullica Hill, NJ, where she sang in the choir and participated in the women’s groups. She attended Nature Club meetings, the Woodbury Kiwanis Club Travel Series, and the Harrison Township Senior luncheons. She was instrumental in starting a Red Hat group - the Scarlet Toppers - and enjoyed volunteering at the Harrison Township Historical Society. She enjoyed reading, learning new things (even how to use a computer!), and traveling near and far. One of her last outings was this past December when she took the PATCO high-speed line into Philadelphia with family to see the Christmas light show at Macy’s, a long-standing family tradition.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar S. and Mary Emma (Gooden) Owen of New Jersey; brother Howard Owen; sister-in-law, Maude Kalbfus; and husbands, Hildreth Moore, Walter Seery, and George Baldwin. She is survived by, and will always be lovingly remembered by, her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and David Cooper of Mannington Township, NJ; step-children George (Joanne) Baldwin, Jeanne Baldwin, and Elizabeth Baldwin; granddaughters Wendy M. (Jay) Mann and Donna Moore; great-grandchildren Hannah, Rebecca, and Natalie Mann and McKenna, Riley, and Hunter (5th) Moore; niece Patricia (Lawrence) Howk; extended family, friends, and acquaintances; and her two beloved cats, Willie and Benny.

Family, friends, and acquaintances may visit Thursday, February 13, 2020, from 6pm-8pm and Friday, February 14, 2020, from 10am-11am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 284 Cedar Road, Mullica Hill, NJ. A service will follow visitation on Friday at 11am, with private interment at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ, where Mildred will rest peacefully next to her parents and brother.

In lieu of flowers, Mildred would be most pleased if all money that would otherwise be spent be used to plan a special outing with your loved ones. In the alternative, please adopt a local teacher and donate needed classroom supplies in her honor.
