As their new neighbor, Richard and Jonette, welcomed us warmly. Richard was pleased when I told him I was born at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital when my father was stationed there. Since I teach Asian history, I was eager to take advantage of his vast knowledge of naval history and I asked him to recommend a book on the Pacific campaign in WWII. He responded by lending me a book which he deemed the best on the subject. I was in the process of developing a list of questions to draw upon his expertise and looked forward to hearing his thoughts. While our friendship was sadly brief, I consider myself fortunate to have met him for he impressed me as being a distinguished gentleman and a generous soul.

I’m the proud son of a tin can sailor. My Dad was the hero who raised me into the man I’ve become. He showed me what it was to listen to different styles of music. He had a love for Flyers hockey
