Joan and I called Uncle Stephen "Uncle TT" because he drank so much iced tea. (Who knows if he really did, but that was the impression of two little girls.) We loved to be silly around Uncle TT, because he played along and was always so good natured with us. I recall several songs about his tea intake, and maybe even a play. (That was probably led by Joan, who had the dramatic gift.) As I got older, I kept in regular communication with Stephen because he was smart, easy to talk to, and very funny. He had a quick wit and an endearing sense of humor--a touch of sarcasm mixed with an intellectual flair. My last substantive conversation with him was a couple of months ago, and it ranged from the exploits of his great nieces and nephews, to politics, living in the south, interracial marriage, and certainly to his health. He really had a rough ride with his health, and I imagine that I would not fare as well mentally if I had to endure what he did. He maintained his sense of humor and his easy ability to connect. When Ruth told me he had a steady stream of visitors while at the hospital, some of whom he had know for decades, I was at first surprised, then not. Stephen had a charisma and authenticity that made people like him, and a kindness that kept them in his circle. Much love, from his family in Tennessee: Martha, Goffrey, Ona, Braun and Mahalia
