Obituary for Theodore O. "Ted" Howland

Theodore O. Howland age 73, of Mickleton passed Monday, May 22, 2023.

Ted met his lovely Bride at 19 and was a dedicated, supportive and loving husband for nearly 53 years. He started his career as an accountant in banking. His life and career choices changed course after the birth of their only child to his true career calling of raising him as a stay-at-home dad. He enjoyed starting every day by having coffee with Vera, and ending each day with family dinner. He loved to read, many times consuming multiple books at once. He was an avid history buff, and passed his love for history and learning on to his son. He always looked forward to attending class trips, hosting den meetings for cub scouts as den leader, and the many car rides with his family throughout the years – from school drop offs, to East Coast road trips. He was a reliable designated driver for others, though he did enjoy an occasional bourbon or Irish whiskey and loved playing Irish Drinking songs on his harmonica. He was consistent and reliable, and a presence of stability during difficult moments in his friends' and family's lives. He and his wife shared their joy of gardening and landscaping together regularly, though his hatred of pool maintenance was likely common knowledge to those who even peripherally knew him. His sense of humor was dry and quippy, but also sweet. “Dad Jokes” were truly his wheelhouse. His love for taking care of others extended to cats, as he cared for many indoor and outdoor cats in his lifetime. His last major trip – to Scotland – with Vera was the best of his life, as they racked up miles in their rental car seeing the countryside.

Ted was a gentle and loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, neighbor and friend, and he will be greatly missed.

Theodore is survived by his loving wife Vera (nee Amonson), his son Timothy and his wife Katherine, Grandchildren Elowyn and Hendrix Howland, his outdoor cat (Tracey), his Sister-In-Law and her husband (Penny and John), his Sister-from-another-Mother (Betsy), his home renovation companion (Tara), his lifelong friend (Frank), his longtime friends and neighbors (Beth, Lou, Steve, Debbie, Dave and BettyAnn), Date-night partners (Pat, Lynn, Jim, Mary) as well as many other friends and family (too many to list - blame Tim if you feel missed).
