Obituary for William Johnson Jr.

William F. Johnson, Jr., age 75, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Sunday January 10, 2021, after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on Dec. 27th, 1945, Bill is survived by his wife Daryl Ann, daughters Christine Norris (John) of Sewell, Karen Lavallen (Harry) of East Windsor, NJ, Sarah Lukacs (John) of Stafford, VA, sisters Beth Johnson of Glassboro, Carol Johnson of Pitman, grandchildren Jimmy, Nathan, Ryan, Heather, John and William, nieces Betsy Davis and Kate Davis-Horan, nephews Jason and Michael Gonserkervis, brother-in-law Michael Gonserkevis (Joan), as well as several cousins. He is predeceased by his first wife Patricia Gonserkevis Johnson in 1985 and his parents Ethel and William Johnson, Sr.

Bill graduated from Glassboro High School in 1963, and attended the then Glassboro State College, achieving a BA degree in Government Services in June 1980. He served in the Air Force from 1965-1969. He worked for the IRS / U.S. Treasury Department as a Field Investigator for 30+ years. He was most proud, however, of his 35+ year volunteer career with the Mutual Fire Company #1 of Sewell, where he held the positions of Lieutenant, Captain, and was the last Assistant Chief. He retained the title of Treasurer until last year and was a Life Member.

His hobbies included Tae Kwon Do, in which he achieved a 1st Degree Black Belt; archery; woodworking and home renovations; and he was a marksman with a handgun. One of Bill’s proudest achievements was that he built his family home in 1976 with the help of friends and family.

Funeral services are being held at Smith Funeral Home in Mantua, NJ. Viewing is on Friday Jan. 15th, 6-8 pm and 10-11 am Saturday Jan. 16th, with services at 11:00 AM and burial following at Wenonah Cemetery.
