Obituary for Eva E Hasher

Eva E Hasher
Eva Essler Hasher (nee Jacobsen) passed away on September 12th. She has finally been reunited with her beloved mother, Elsie Jacobsen and brothers, Carl and Tom.
"Eve" as she liked to be called was born in Philadelphia on September 6, 1926. After her graduation from Simon Gratz High School, she tried various occupations ranging from enemy plane spotter during the last year of World War II - to sales in an exclusive hat shop.
She finally settled on a career as a switchboard operator- first at Bell Telephone, then at WCAU Television and Radio (at that time the local affiliate of CBS) where she remained for 32 years. Her smooth, pleasant voice became the trademark greeting of all who called in and out in the days before direct phone lines. Technicians and celebrities alike came to know Eve and enjoy her terrific sense of humor.
Eve moved her family from Philadelphia to South Jersey in 1957. She resided first in Mantua, then Richwood. In 1972 she settled in Pitman - always a favorite of her family's with its quaint movie theatre, Betty Park and the Hobo Band concerts in summer.
Though she continued her work at WCAU, she also took on part-time work at the Woodbury Court House, and later at Sears in Deptford. During this time she made many long-lasting friends locally.
Upon retirement in 1988 she remained active with her hobbies in oil painting and needle arts. She also took on the task of organizing trips with a local tour bus company and leading the tours - handing out as many jokes as candy.
In her golden years she enjoyed the companionship of her good friend Erik Nielsen. They traveled extensively and spent many happy times at their campground home outside Cape May.
She is survived by her daughters, Christine Essler, Brooklyn, NY and Holly Hasher Campbell (Ray Holohan), Mantua, grandsons, Robert Campbell, Glenn Campbell, Jr., and Curtis Campbell.
There will be a private family service. Should anyone wish to make a donation in honor of Eve, contributions to Don't Bully Us Rescue, PO Box 246, Wenonah, NJ 08090, would be a lovely gift as Eve treasured her furry companions, Rosie, Silver and Sprezee. Memories and condolences can be shared at smithfhmantua.com
