Obituary for Delores A. Shute

Delores A. Shute
Delores A. Shute (nee Fanslau) age 91, of Clarksboro passed Wednesday, November 29, 2023. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harold "Hod" Shute Sr. Delores and Hod were high school sweethearts and were married for 59 years. Delores was a dedicated farmer's wife wearing many hats including but not limited to keeping the books, managing the payroll for the farm and packing tomatoes. She also worked for Dr. Simmerman and Associates in Pitman for several years.

Delores will be remembered as a quiet, but strong woman as well as a great listener and lifelong friend. She was a devoted mother to her three children, an outstanding cook and baker and made three meals each day for 50 years plus canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. The cellar was well stocked! All her meals were made from scratch, and she and Hod provided many Thanksgiving gatherings on the farm that will never be forgotten. She became a skilled seamstress resulting in curtains and other household items plus clothing for herself and her children when they were young. She also became a 4H leader to teach sewing and cooking. Delores enjoyed trips to Lancaster County with Hod, as well as bus trips with friends. She liked spending her time reading, being with family, caring for a cat or two, loved watching wild rabbits playing at sundown, feeding the ducks on the pond, and tending to her inside and outside plants. She bowled in a league in her younger years and was part of a YMCA ladies swim group. She loved becoming a grandmother... the farm became a huge playground.

She was one of the longest-
standing members of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Clarksboro and attended the Joy Circle Sunday School class for many years. Delores is survived by her children, Gail Ziegler and her husband James, Harold Shute and his wife Janie, and Jill Melchiorre and her husband Michael; one grandson, Bradford Ziegler and his wife Elizabeth; and her brother, Kenneth Fanslau Sr. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert, and Agnes (nee Gandolfo) Fanslau and her brother, Robert Fanslau Jr.

Family and Friends are invited to visit from 10:30am to 12:00pm on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main Street, Mantua, New Jersey 08051. Funeral Service will be held at 12:00pm at Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro, NJ 08020. The family welcomes flowers, as Delores loved all types of colorful varieties or donations can be made in her honor to Gloucester County Animal Shelter, 1200 N.
