Obituary for Harold E. Shute Sr. Sr.

Harold E. ''Hod'' Shute, age 81 of Clarksboro, NJ was called home in the presence of his family on Monday, November 14, 2011. A lifelong area resident and Clarksboro farmer for over 50 years, Hod supplied produce to local markets and was especially proud of his early tomatoes and “old fashioned” yellow sweet potatoes. He considered perseverance to be a virtue and probably never gave up on anything in his life. A patient man and avid outdoorsman, he was an expert deer hunter and enjoyed “running dogs” in fox and rabbit chases. Hod was a mentor and friend to many over the years. He enjoyed retirement by walking every day, taking trips to Lancaster County and circulating the local farmers markets & restaurants for a cup of coffee and conversation. A faithful husband, father, and grandfather, he was married to his wife Delores A. (nee Fanslau) for 59 years. He is also survived by his children Gail M. Ziegler and her husband James R. of Medford, Harold E. Shute, Jr. and his wife Janie of Lambertville, Jill E. Melchiorre and her husband Michael G. of Clarksboro, and his grandson, Bradford Harold Ziegler. He was predeceased by his brothers Everett and Jay. Relatives and friends may visit with the family 9 -11 AM Saturday, November 19 at Smith Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Mantua, NJ where funeral services will be held at 11 AM. Interment will be in Eglington Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Evangelical United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
