Obituary for John Wilfred Witasick

John Wilfred  Witasick
John Wilfred Witasick, 93, of Woodbury Heights, NJ took his final flight on June 16, 2018. John was born and raised in Shamokin, PA. He was Salutatorian of the St. Edward’s High School graduating class of 1942. John proudly served his country in World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March 1943 and after attending Navigator Training School was assigned with the Army Air Corps 434th Troop Carrier Group, 74th Squadron, European Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Second Lieutenant.

John graduated Cum Laude from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Chi Epsilon National Civil Engineering Honor Society and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. After graduation, John accepted a job with Texaco, Inc., and was assigned to the Texaco Eagle Point Refinery in Westville, NJ, where he met his future wife, Libby. He retired in 1985 after 34 years of service.

John has lived in Woodbury Heights for the last 60 years. John is the beloved husband of 62 years to Libby (nee Putiri). Loving father to Kevin Witasick and his wife Whitney; John Witasick and his wife Cara; and Christine Witasick-Gawason and her husband Peter. Cherished grandfather to Kevin, Peter, Alexis, Gianna, Tori, and Bianca.

John was a founding member of St. Margaret Parish, Woodbury Heights, where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a past member of the Finance Committee, Parish Council, and St. Margaret’s Men’s Club.

John was a charter and third degree member of St. Margaret’s Knights of Columbus Council 13259, Woodbury Heights, and a Fourth Degree Knight of Msg. Arthur B. Strenski Assembly No. 1849, Woodbury, NJ.

John was a quiet man with a dry sense of humor. He will be remembered for his big heart and warm smile. In past years he enjoyed vacationing in Sea Isle City in the summers, and Arizona in the winters, and loved playing golf and bridge. John was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan. John’s greatest joy was his children and grandchildren.

John was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Mary Witasick. He is survived by two brothers, Bernard Witasick from Waukegan, IL; Gerald Witasick from Bel Air, MD; and a sister, Margaret Boblick from Shamokin, PA. John is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Friday, June 22nd, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM at Infant Jesus Parish at St. Margaret 's Church, 845 Third Street, Woodbury Heights, NJ. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM. Interment Gloucester County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to Infant Jesus Parish – St. Margaret Church, 334 Beech Avenue, Woodbury Heights, NJ, 08097, or St. Margaret Regional School, 773 Third Street, Woodbury Heights, NJ, 08097.
