Condolences

Condolence From: Victor W Gehring
Condolence: I knew Art thru my father (Doug Gehring) who worked and carpooled with him at DuPont for many years. Art was first person to get me seriously interested in computers. I recall visiting his exhibit at a DuPont “take your kid to work day”, back in the early 80’s, where he showed me his lunar landing mission simulation. During that time, Dad had transferred from TX back to NJ and I was still in TX not doing well at UT Austin in mechanical engineering and looking to change majors. Anyway, it was very a simple concept computer program to land your ship on the moon, where you typed in a fuel rate, pressed enter and waited to see what that did to your velocity and altitude that printed out on a green-bar paper printer. I recall crashing several times! What fun!

Then Art took me to his office and showed me his CRT workstation and where he used my UT student ID card ro actually dial into the UT computer network using an acoustic phone coupler – the predecessor to the dial-up modem. As he was telling me about computer career opportunities, he had connected his terminal to the UT Computational Center that was featured in the movie, “War Games”. Looking back, as a UT alumni, I suppose he wanted to poke around their network some to see what was new. Well, this was long before the Internet and computer gaming, but I was hooked regardless. So I eventually ended up switching majors and completed my Computer Science degree and have been enjoying a rewarding career in IT for over 30 years now. So I suppose Art would appreciate the irony of me leaving this tribute to him via my PC over the Internet. I am grateful that Art took some of his time to inspire me and help me along my journey.

May you rest in peace with God's family and enjoy being reunited with those who have gone before your in heaven for eternity- especially your old carpool buddies!
