And Irishman's wake

I have known the Coughlin family for almost thirty years and was best friend's with its patriarch and father William Coughlin Sr. He was my dearest friend during some of my toughest and loneliest periods of my life. Through him I met all his children....some I knew better than others. Unfortunately I did not know Bill, Jr. that well....I guess he was the quiet Beatle of the family which is saying a lot. But my memory of Bill, Jr. Is that of his father's wake in center city on a hot Friday august afternoon in 1999. I had never been to an Irish wake. After the mass and burial of his father a reception was held at Bill Jr.'s house. There were so many people and so much food. I was surprised not to see any beer or alcohol...I felt that this is very much like and Italian funeral reception. I ate from a delicious Buffett in honor of his father and maintained my composure throughout not to show my sadness. I was walking around the yard and lifted my head to see Bill and his brother carrying a massive keg of beer and placing under a tree. Bill had a cigarette in his mouth and the beer hose in his hand and looked at me and said have a drink. it was at that time I knew the real wake was about to begin and there no way I was every going to survive unless I got out at that moment....I respectfully declined and he looked at me as if to say oh I forgot u are Italian...I said goodbye to everyone and left it was about 1pm and I knew that they were going to be drinking straight for the next 10 hours....no doubt, to remember their dad.....now more that 15 years later in a wink of an eye not only did Cass join her beloved husband and her son David but now Bill, Jr. The quiet Coughlin is with them....gone much much too soon but he leaves a legacy and life that will continue through his brothers sisters children and grandchildren....raise a glass Your brother, father, grandfather and husband's mission is complete...amen
